JUNE 2008 – Cadwell Race Report

The fifth round of the Porsche 924 Championship was held at a very windy, (albeit sunny) Cadwell Park. The ever-daunting Cadwell presented the drivers with a tough challenge for the weekends racing. With qualifying and both races being held in one day there was very little margin for error on a track that offers very little room for error!

Will managed to qualify in pole position by an impressive 0.615 second. He said after qualifying “I’m over the moon! It’s so important to qualify well at Cadwell as it’s so hard to overtake here.”

With the qualifying over it was soon time for the first race. Will got a good start, as did most of the grid behind him. Once through the first few corners he could settle into his race rhythm. Never allowed to relax Will was constantly hounded by a very quick Matt Davies who on lap nine tried a daring overtaking move which ended up taking both Will and Matt off the track. Will managed to get the car fired up and back on the track ahead of Matt to hold the lead to the chequered flag.

After the race a very hot Will said, “it was incredibly close between Matt and me and towards the end of the race he got a little over zealous trying to get past me. All was okay though as we both got back on and didn’t loose any positions. I was really made to earn that one!”

The regulations say that the position you finish the first race in is the position you start the second race from. This meant that again Will started from pole position. Once again Will got a good start quickly settling into the race. Matt Davies in the mean time was having a battle with Graham Heard for second place. Will saw his opportunity and started to put in some flying laps to try and put some distance between the tussling Davies and Heard. By the time Will past the chequered flag he was just under twenty-three seconds in the lead.

Will also set the new lap record for the Porsche 924 Championship at Cadwell with a storming lap of 1 minute 47.289 seconds. Asking Will after the race how it went he said, “what a result! It’s so hard to do well at Cadwell as there’s so little margin for error. So to have got pole, won both races and set the lap record is a dream come true! I just hope we can keep this momentum going for the rest of the season.”

Being the only double winner of the weekend Will was reported in Autosport magazine as being “unstoppable in the Porsche 924 ranks”, and we have to agree!

The next round is at the fantastic Anglesey circuit in North Wales on the 19th and 20th July. If you find yourself there please pop over and say hello to Will and the SMS team.
